The Southern Gulf Islands are populated by artists and creative individuals of all sorts, from painters to performers. Mayne is one of four island communities that make up the Southern Gulf Islands Arts Council. For information about the regional arts council or about operations on Pender, Galiano and Saturna islands, visit www.artsontheislands.org.
Arts on Mayne is the Mayne Island Branch of the Southern Gulf Islands Arts Council. As such, it works to uphold constitution of the Southern Gulf Islands Arts Council which is to enhance the cultural and social well being of its member communities. On Mayne Island this includes visual art exhibitions and multi-disciplinary events, funding of a variety of arts programming through the dissemination of small grants, and offering support for member artists.
In accordance with the bylaws of the Southern Gulf Island Arts Council, a local board of directors guides Arts on Mayne's operations:
Deborah Strong, President
Jennifer Peers, Secretary/Vice president
David Lindquist, Treasurer
Mary Griffin, Funding Committee Chair
The group meets at the Mayne Island Library, usually on the second Thursday evening of the month (click here for meeting dates). Meetings range from informal gatherings to share news and ideas, to formal business meetings as and when when required. The Library is also a venue where members' art is displayed on an ongoing basis.
